PARISH CENTRE SCHOOL ADDITION UPDATE - November 2023

In December of 2018, we had a budgeted cost of $5.5 M for the construction of the Parish Centre School Addition, and the goal was to raise 50% of this number to be approved for construction. We met this goal!

However, after we had submitted the application for the Development Permit to the City of Vancouver in September 2022, the budgeted cost had skyrocketed already by August 2023 to $16 M. An affordability analysis was performed that month, which indicated that we could only afford a budget of $12.6 M. Therefore, to ensure the financial viability of the Project, the Building Committee agreed to a redesign submitted by our architect, Kuntjoro Architecture Inc., which aligned with the affordability report. The Development Permit for the original design was still under process and according to the City of Vancouver’s permit policy, an amendment can only be submitted once the original Development Permit is approved. Nonetheless, the Building Committee took a chance and submitted a “rationale summary” on January 29, 2023, requesting the City to consider our rationale including our re-design, to determine if they will allow us to submit this re-design as an amendment to the original Development Permit.

Thanks to the prayers of the St. Anthony of Padua parishioners and families, a miracle was delivered. The Director of Planning and his senior team approved our ‘rationale proposal’ request and allowed us to resubmit a full package for design, including the final detailed architectural design drawings, site plans, floor plans, building elevations, 3D views, with Structural, Civil, and Landscaping consultant’s report. This now means that we are back on track to obtaining a Development Permit approved by the estimated date of June 2024! The subsequent step after the approval of the Development Permit is the application for the Building Permit.

As of today, the St. Anthony of Padua School and Parish Community have raised $6.3 M. The SAP Finance Committee has set a target for the Community to raise another $670,000 by the end of 2024. We have come a long way since December 2018.  The SAP Community is blessed with members who continue to work ardently to ensure the success in the building of our Parish Centre School Addition. There is no doubt, with God’s good grace and the unfailing dedication of our community members, we can continue to meet every goal along the way. As always, we truly thank you for your generosity and continued support!
